Health risk
What is a Health Risk?
In general terms, it is the probability that an event or external agent may cause harm to human health or life.
Unlike a mechanical accident (such as a physical impact), a health risk is usually “silent”: it occurs when the body interacts with biological, physical, or, in your case, chemical agents that alter its normal functioning.
Health Risk in the Chemical Sector
Health risk mainly manifests through uncontrolled exposure to hazardous substances. These substances can enter your body in three ways:
- Inhalation: Breathing in gases, vapors, or fine dust particles (the most common route).
- Dermal Exposure: Direct contact with the skin or eyes, causing burns or systemic absorption.
- Ingestion: Due to poor hygiene practices (eating or smoking with contaminated hands).

Common Types of Effects
- Corrosive: Destroy tissues upon contact (strong acids).
- Toxic: Damage specific organs such as the liver or kidneys.
- Irritant: Cause inflammation of the mucous membranes or skin.
- Systemic: Affect the nervous or circulatory system (such as some solvents).
How Is It Controlled?
- Engineering Controls: Use of fume hoods, closed systems, and proper ventilation.
- Administrative Controls: Personnel rotation to reduce exposure time and clear labeling/signage (such as the NFPA diamond or the GHS system).
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Respirators with specific filters, nitrile/neoprene gloves, and eye protection.
Your 5 Second Checklist Before Working
- Have I read the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for this substance today?
- Is my protective equipment in good condition, or is it already saturated/worn out?
- Do I know what to do in case of a spill or accidental contact?
